Act 1 The Last Keepers

Chapter 1: The Hiccup

A solitary keeper's carefully ordered world is interrupted. Wess Anawa has built a life of routine and self-sufficiency at Mars Midway Station, declining every invitation back into the company of others. Then an unscheduled shuttle arrives carrying Aethea Sterling, a brilliant first-posting keeper sent to a station that has gone silent. What begins as a supply handoff becomes a shared unease: VIG is hiding something about MESS, and neither of them has the full picture. Wess breaks his own isolation to accompany her. Barely clear of the station, they stumble onto something that dwarfs their mission entirely, a stable distortion in space that should not exist and behaves like nothing in any textbook. In a single cycle, a quiet man's quiet life is overtaken by the two largest things that can happen to a person: meeting someone who changes everything, and discovering something that changes everyone.
